The Pandemic of Childhood Obesity
It is obvious at schools, playgrounds, amusement parks, and swimming pools...
Usually when one thinks of obesity statistics, The United States comes to mind. Across the media the United States is compared to all other "thinner" countries. The truth is that the United States has a problem with overeating and weight gain. And because the parents are this way, children have a higher likelihood that they are the same way and will end up the same way eventually. But another truth is that it isn't just the United States that has some problems with obesity. Countries across the world have a higher childhood obesity percentage than most people could even imagine. Here are just a few of the worldwide statistics for obesity relating to adults and children:
22 million children age 5 and under are obese or overweight across the entire world.
Some studies in Africa have concluded that 0.7 percent of children are malnourished while 3 percent are overweight or obese.
In the United States alone, 60% of adults are obese/overweight, as well as 13% of children.
Across the world, it is estimated that 300 million people are obese.
25% of 4 year olds in Egypt are overweight.
Now that we've seen the startling statistics, how can we fix this problem? It is definitely going to take some work and dedication to not only correct our own health habits, but teach the younger generation better, healthier lifestyles. We can do this by being examples to the benefits of a fit and healthy life. Here are just a few ways we can help that younger generation:
By limiting the child's television time, it will give them more time to go play outside and keep up with a healthy and exciting lifestyle. As soon as a child plops in front of the TV, their energy levels drop and they become lethargic.
Get them interested in sports or some form of physical activity. A great way to get them motivated is to let them pick the sport they want to play or the activity they want to participate in. Another great way to get them involved is to take them to a game and let them choose some football picks (non-gambling, of course). This will help them learn the rules of the game and eventually love the game and anything that has to do with moving around and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
